π¬ The Practical One
All five counties leave trick-or-treat hours up to towns and neighborhoods rather than setting an official countywide time. This list fills in as towns confirm their 2026 hours β typically late September into October.
Recent-year town times above are reported patterns, not confirmed 2026 hours β most towns announce in late September or October. We'll update this list as they do.
π Candy Without the Walking
Parking-lot candy, farm animals in costume, and Halloween without any scares β built for the littlest trick-or-treaters.
Trunk-or-treat in the parking lot, a safari wagon ride, a pumpkin painting contest, and full access to NOVA Wild's animals β capybaras, cheetahs, kangaroos and more. Local businesses and families decorate trunks; costumes encouraged.
Trick-or-treat around the farm, seasonal crafts and games, and visits with the farm animals dressed for the season. Free admission to Kidwell Farm; some special event days may charge.
A non-scary costume trail through the nature center β meet costumed characters and animal-interaction stations along the way, then find the fully decked-out Halloween House at the end. Non-scary costumes only.
Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services' annual free Halloween night β pumpkin decorating, trick-or-treat candy, games, face painting, live animal interactions, inflatables and a big Halloween inflatable display lighting up the park after dark.
An annual trunk-or-treat with a costume parade down Main, Filbert and Germain streets, police-escorted in recent years. Free and open to the community.
Loudoun's shopping centers and local businesses run their own trick-or-treats too β dates below are 2025 patterns; 2026 dates weren't posted as of this writing.
Confirm current-year dates directly with each shopping center closer to October.
π» Local Legends
Guided history tours with a spookier-than-usual edge β real local stories from the region's oldest downtowns.
The Clarke County Historical Association's guided walking tour through downtown Berryville β the Courthouse, the former Battletown Inn, the Crow's Nest, and CCHA's own headquarters, each with its own ghost story.
A guided history-and-ghost-story walk through Old Town Winchester, meeting at the archway near Cork Street and the Loudoun Street Mall.
π Best Dressed
Main Street processions and daytime costume contests β no trick-or-treat bag required.
One of the oldest Halloween parades in the eastern U.S., running since 1957. Starts at Ida Lee Park and proceeds down King Street to Fairfax Street β marching bands, decorated floats, classic cars, and Leesburg's fire, police and rescue units.
A full day run jointly by Warrenton Parks & Rec and the Police Department. Kids gather at 5th Street at 9:45am for a police-escorted costume march to the Courthouse, followed by a costume contest, then trick-or-treating at Old Town businesses until noon.
πΊοΈ Worth the Drive
A little further out, but well worth the trip if you're chasing bigger scares or a classic DC tradition.
Trick-or-treat through the National Zoo after hours β treat stations throughout the park, animals enjoying Halloween-themed enrichment, and after-hours access to the Small Mammal House, Elephant Community Center and Reptile Discovery Center. Family-friendly, not scary.
Nighttime scare zones, haunted mazes and after-dark rides across the park β intense, and not recommended for young children.
Billed as the oldest ghost tour in America β 52 years running. A lantern-lit, 19th-century-attired walk through about 14 blocks of Harpers Ferry's historic Lower Town, with stories tied to the town's Civil War-era hauntings. Family- and dog-friendly, no jump scares.
The original, locally-owned ghost tour company in Gettysburg β walk the town's most haunted streets and hear Civil War-era ghost stories from professional local storytellers. Family-friendly, with several tour routes and dedicated ghost-hunt options for the more adventurous.
